COLUMBIA, SC - You may not have ever heard of a motorsports club, but they're growing in popularity throughout the country and especially in the Carolinas.
Some are calling the hobby "The New Golf" and all of the members have a need for speed.
The roar of the engines are the sounds you would normally hear at a race track, but the racers at the Carolina Motorsports Park are not the drivers you would normally find at a race track.
They aren't professionals and it's not a career -- it's a hobby
"I'm later in life, so if I am going to do it I need to do it," said Steve Phillips, a member of the club.
The club consists of of about 75 men and women who gather a few days a month to go fast.
"It's a thrill for me because I am still learning. You are trying to become better in all of the different skills in the car," said Phillips.
The key to the club is providing track access and affordabilty, two things that usually smash the dreams of wannabe race car drivers.
"We've taken a golf model. We have a clubhouse. We have a membership and we have days you can come so it's almost like a tee time. You can come on one of our track days," said Jochen Tartak.
If you wanted to, you could bring a street car and take a spin, but most of the members have a bit of an addiction to speed.
The drivers even have access to some professional advice in a classroom setting. Everything one would need to know to get around the track quickly without wrecking the car.
It's an open invitation to strap in and celebrate your lead foot with all of the fun and few consequences.
